Camp Goal: Dak Prescott Leads 5 Cowboys Signing New Contracts?

The Cowboys, we're told, are working to follow a tradition by getting signed contract extensions with stars early at training camp in Oxnard.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are sometimes criticized for not being proactive with contract extensions for star players. But there is also a tradition around here to get deals like that done in August at training camp. And the Cowboys, we're told, are working to follow that tradition.

CowboysSI.com broke the story in the offseason that Dallas talks regarding CeeDee Lamb could be termed "ongoing'' and that his fifth-year option would be picked up at the deadline of May 2. That got done, and so even with those talks, there is not a particular deadline there.

But cornerback Trevon Diggs getting an extension? That is on COO Stephen Jones' "radar,'' as he's put it, because this is Diggs' final contractual year. Tackle Terence Steele is also playing on a one-more-year contract, so put him on the list. (CowboysSI.com reported this weekend that negotiations are occurring there.)

Dallas does have the option of using the 2024 franchise tag on one of them (but of course not both). The Cowboys could also tag Tony Pollard again, but the running back supply-and-demand issue doesn't suggest that'll happen; we predicted earlier this week that this might be the Pro Bowler Pollard's final season in Dallas

Among the notables who are scheduled to be free next spring are Stephon Gilmore, Dorance Armstrong, Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker and Tyler Biadasz; Jones and his staff could try to do some business there as well. (Micah Parsons isn't due yet ... but Dallas is mindful of the possibility of him down the line becoming the highest-paid defender in NFL history.)

A centerpiece to all of this is the planned extension for QB Dak Prescott. Done right, Dallas' present cap room can balloon from $20 million to $40 million, making it easier to do some of the aforementioned deals. Can a Dak deal lead to one for Diggs, Steele, Lamb and another starter?

The Cowboys insist there needn't be a "pecking order'' here. But a new Prescott contract in the coming hours or days or whatever would represent a massive cap-related domino.
