Trey Lance Trade & Contract: How Much Are Cowboys Paying?

What's the contractual cost for the former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance? Not a problem, as a Cowboys source is providing us the details on the third-string QB's contract for the next two seasons.

ARLINGTON - One of the reasons we didn't quickly warm to the idea of the Dallas Cowboys' trade for Trey Lance? We assumed that - while we are always in favor of "dart throws'' at the QB position - it would create a financial drain on the salary cap.

It wasn't the fourth-round pick surrendered. It doesn't have to be about the "America's Team'' hoopla, the "white noise'' as those inside The Star call it. And it has nothing to do with Dak Prescott's job security.

But the money for the former No. 3 overall pick? Nope. As it turns out, that is not a problem, either, as a Cowboys source is providing us the details on Lance's contract for the next two seasons.

Because the 49ers already paid Lance a $2.82 million roster bonus for this year as part of his original four-year, $34 million contract, the Cowboys in 2022 are only responsible for $940,000 in base salary. No cap problem there.

Next year, however, the Cowboys will owe Lance $5.3 million, and all of that money for the 2024 season is fully guaranteed. Is that a cap problem? Not if he can play a little bit.

Lance was a flop in San Francisco behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. In Dallas, he will start his tenure in Dallas as the No. 3 quarterback. ... way behind Prescott and Rush. A project with a payoff.

Candidly,'' Jones responded when asked how Lance might help the Cowboys in 2023, "I don’t want to plan on, count on, or wish for help from him this year.”
