While Cowboys Debate, Jets Trade WR Mims to Lions
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys spent the day here inside The Star working on a number of roster-building moves. But while the Cowboys front office debated the merits of Denzel Mims … another NFC team pulled the trade trigger.
As CowboysSI.com was first to report, the Cowboys on Wednesday had taken a phone call from the New York Jets regarding the availability of fourth-year receiver Mims, with an NFL source telling CowboysSI.com that “this should be a no-brainer” for Dallas.
And why? A second source tells us the New York asking price might be as low as “a conditional seventh-round pick” - meaning that if the Baylor product Mims makes the team/contributes, the Cowboys give up a last-round pick.
And if Mims, 24, doesn’t make an impact in Dallas? The Cowboys sacrifice nothing.
But while Dallas debated - we’re told the scouting department especially wanted the move - it was the Lions who acted. … maybe giving a conditional sixth.
The Jets have worked to move off of Mims even before they traded for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But now it seems they will either trade or cut him.
The Cowboys’ top of the depth chart at receiver is loaded with CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup. But all the talent that made the Texas native Mims attractive to the Jets in his 2020 NFL Draft (and the Cowboys scouting department liked him as well) remained in place.
Mims will finish his stint with the Jets having played in 30 games with 42 receptions for 676 yards and no touchdowns.
The 6-3 Mims, who ran a sizzling 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the 2020 Scouting Combine, now joins an explosive Detroit offense .. instead of an explosive Dallas offense.
