'Why's He No. 88?' Dez Bryant Questions CeeDee Lamb Plan of Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones
FRISCO - It would not be accurate to say that Dez Bryant is "ripping'' Jerry Jones or "ripping'' CeeDee Lamb or "ripping'' the Dallas Cowboys, his long-time former employer and his beloved home-state team still.
But Dez does have a question after "his'' Cowboys suffered a blowout loss at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers on "Sunday Night Football,'' a 42-10 debacle during which the Dallas offense couldn't figure out how to get the ball to Lamb, who is assigned jersey No. 88 - meaning the Cowboys think of him as a rightful member of "The 88 Club'' in which Dez, Michael Irvin and Drew Pearson are esteemed members.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked on 105.3 The Fan if he would have preferred to see more opportunities for Lamb, who ended that game with only four receptions for 49 yards.
Jerry's response was ... notable.
“I don’t know about that,'' Jones said, adding that instead, "What I want to see” is ball distribution to all of Dak Prescott's supposed targets. And that - understandably - has Dez puzzled.
"Why put 88 on his back?'' Bryant said on Twitter, meaning, "Why assign CeeDee a special number if he's not going to be used as if he's a special player''?
Dez continued, "CeeDee's gotta touch the ball more.''
Lamb was visibly frustrated by it all during the loss, and Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has since met with the Pro Bowl receiver as the Cowboys, as an organization, try to keep their cool. But yes, when quarterback Dak Prescott ends up throwing almost as many passes to the 49ers (Dak had three interceptions) as he does to Lamb?
Lamb's going to be rubbed wrong. And Bryant is going to be rubbed wrong. And Jerry's kooky remarks do not provide any comforting salve.
The Cowboys will look to win against the Chargers on Monday night, and we'll see if they look to Lamb more involved.
