Will McClay's Big Decision: 'Great For the Cowboys!' Coach Mike McCarthy

Will McClay's Big Decision to Stay: 'Great For the Dallas Cowboys!' Coach Mike McCarthy

FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was officially made aware on Friday morning something that he already surely had a good feel for - especially because the decision by Will McClay to once again turn down opportunities to be a GM for another NFL club is now an annual activity.

“He’s very important to our operation, without a doubt,'' said McCarthy in a media visit as the Cowboys - with a roster largely assembled by personnel boss McClay and his scouting department in unison with McCarthy's coaching staff - prep for Sunday's playoff visit from the Green Bay Packers. "The most important thing to want as an organization when you know things are right is to build off the consistency.''

McClay's work in the NFL Draft and in player evaluation and acquisition has been "consistently'' excellent. Also "consistent'' are those interview offers that figure to lead to job offers that McClay eventually spurns on a perennial basis. (Want to know why Will keeps saying "no''? BREAKING: McClay Says No To NFL Job Interviews, Stays with Jerry

Those outside the building who continue to clamor for McClay to be given a title (here, owner Jerry Jones is the one with "GM'' stamped on his business card) don't get it. That includes media outlets like ESPN that reported a few days ago that "some people say'' McClay might leave Dallas.

'If, If, If!' Is Cowboys, McCarthy & Belichick' Real News? Or Irresponsible Gossip?

The Cowboys have built a Super Bowl roster. They've also built a Super Bowl-caliber group of front-office leaders, including McClay and McCarthy. (And no, many critics don't understand or acknowledge that about the coach here, either.

Said McCarthy: "I'm very happy for Will personally, because I know the amount of work he puts into this. But this is obviously great for the Dallas Cowboys.”
