Cowboys 'Want To Sign All 3 Of Them!' Dak, CeeDee & Micah: Latest in Contract Talks - FISH PODCAST
We made the point the other day when the news broke of the news NFL salary cap ceiling that celebrating fans and media were missing a major point: As it bloats to a record-setting $255.4 million, yes, that means teams like the Dallas Cowboys have more room.
But it also means - hello! - that the players will want, and get, their percentage-bumped share of the pie.
So we're encouraged that Dallas COO Stephen Jones, speaking on Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis at the NFL Scouting Combine, tipped his hat to that reality.
"The cap bump obviously helps in some ways," he said. "But all 32 teams get a cap bump so we all know what that can mean as well in terms of the price of doing business with whatever situation you're working on."
Bingo. In other words, more cap room does not automatically make it easier to sign Dak Prescott, who we believe might be seeking an extension that might approach $60 million APY, making him the highest-paid player ever.
Nor does it automatically make it easier to sign CeeDee Lamb, who we believe might be seeking an extension that might approach in excess of $30 million APY, making him the highest-paid receiver ever.
Nor does it automatically make it easier to sign Micah Parsons, who we believe might be seeking an extension that might approach in excess of $30 million APY, making him the highest-paid defensive player ever.
See the problem here?
Nonetheless, Jones is not deterred from the ultimate goals, which begin with trying to re-work the $59.4 million cap hit in 2024 presently on Dak's deal. The NFL business year opens March 13, at which point all teams must be cap-compliant.
There is work to be done there.
"Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy; That's all that's on our mind,'' Jones said, adding, "We've got ways to adjust his cap number for this year.'' (See below for those "ways.'')

And Micah and CeeDee?
"Obviously,'' Jones said, "between Dak and between Micah and CeeDee, the salary cap is real for us with those three guys ...
"We want to do a deal with all three of them."
That statement is a powerful one. It offers clarity as to the ultimate goals ...
Though the "how'' is another issue altogether, as we discuss in the Fish Report and the Fish Podcast. Join us, Cowboys Nation!
