What's Jerry Jones REALLY Thinking on Dallas Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy Future? FISH PODCAST

FRISCO - As a matter of motivation, there is no benefit in rewarding coach Mike McCarthy - engineer of the Dallas Cowboys' third straight 12-win season and third-straight playoff season - with a contract extension today.

Indeed, maybe the "carrot on a stick'' is strategic for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones there.

As a matter of marketing, there is also no benefit of announcing that "no matter what, McCarthy's job is safe.''

Indeed, we know Jones loves his Cowboys news to be "above the fold,'' and by not making the strongest possible declarative statement about the coach's job security, Dallas is the No. 1 "NFL Coaching Carousel'' story ... even though McCarthy is not likely even on that Carousel.

And then there is this, as I have noted often: "Never say never'' is always a useful mindset. So ... is there some circumstance under which Jones could fire McCarthy, even though I know he "has no plans'' to do so? Is there wiggle room when Jerry says, "I don't know how I could be any clearer: Mike is under contract next year so it's not an issue. I'm very pleased with what he's done. He's the big difference this year''?

Yes. and yes. Things could change. Wiggle room exists. (Getting embarrassed on Sunday by Green Bay, for instance, wouldn’t be good.)

So, at the top of the rumor tree, we get to hear about some sort of mysterious "friendship'' that suddenly exists between Jones and Bill Belichick. ... And down the tree we go.

But what did Jerry really say? And what does Jerry really think?
