SI Team Publishers 2020 Season Predictions

The NFL regular season kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs facing the Houston Texans, and SI team publishers offered their predictions for division standings and Super Bowl teams

The 2020 NFL regular season will kick off with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and SI team publishers have predicted they will repeat.

The Chiefs were chosen as projected Super Bowl winners by five of the 18 SI team publishers who were brave enough to predict the division standings and Super Bowl winner and loser.

The New Orleans Saints were second for Super Bowl champion votes with four, following by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with three, the Baltimore Ravens with two, and the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers with one apiece.

It was New Orleans, however, that was the most popular pick as Super Bowl participant with nine votes, followed by Kansas City with eight and Baltimore with six.

The Chiefs also emerged as the only unanimous pick as division champions, and perhaps surprisingly the team that got the next-most first-place votes in their division were the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo was selected by 16 of the 18 publishers, with the New England Patriots getting the other two first-place votes. Most of the divisions featured clear choices for first-place teams: the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North (15 votes), Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East (15 votes), Green Bay Packers (12 votes), New Orleans Saints (13 votes) and San Francisco 49ers (11 votes).

The Miami Dolphins got two second-place votes, 14 third-place votes and two fourth-place votes.

The one division that produced major disagreement was the AFC South, where the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans all received six votes.

At the other end, two teams were unanimous picks to finish last in their division: the Cincinnati Bengals and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Three others came close: the Carolina Panthers got 17 votes in the NFC South, the New York Jets got 16 fourth-place votes in the AFC East, and the Washington Football Team got 15 votes in the NFC East.

One team in the entire league got at least one vote to finish in any of the four spots in its division: the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona got one first-place vote, one second-place vote, five third-place votes, and 11 fourth-place votes.

Here are the publisher-by-publisher predictions:

ALAIN POUPART

Alain Poupart is the publisher/editor of All Dolphins and co-host of the All Dolphins Podcast. Alain has covered the Miami Dolphins on a full-time basis since 1989 for various publications and media outlets, including Dolphin Digest, The Associated Press, the Dolphins team website, and the Fan Nation Network (part of Sports Illustrated). In addition to being a credentialed member of the Miami Dolphins press corps, Alain has covered three Super Bowls (for NFL.com, Football News and the Montreal Gazette), the annual NFL draft, the Senior Bowl, and the NFL Scouting Combine. During his almost 40 years in journalism, which began at the now-defunct Miami News, Alain has covered practically every sport at one time or another, from tennis to golf, baseball, basketball and everything in between. The career also included time as a copy editor, including work on several books such as "Still Perfect," an inside look at the Miami Dolphins' 1972 perfect season. A native of Montreal, Canada, whose first language is French, Alain grew up a huge hockey fan but soon developed a love for all sports, including NFL football. He has lived in South Florida since the 1980s.
