Ramsey Returning to Practice
The Jalen Ramsey Watch can stop.
The three-time All-Pro cornerback indeed will make his return to practice for the Miami Dolphins this week, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported Wednesday morning.
Ramsey will be designated for return on this day, opening his three-week practice window, after which the Dolphins will have to put him on the active roster or keep him on IR, the latter being a worst-case scenario that would involve a significant setback.
The Dolphins, as Wolfe pointed out, certainly aren't about to rush Ramsey back into game action, so they'll be cautious with him with the idea of having him for the stretch run.
The team's next three games are against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, the New England Patriots at home and against the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany on Nov. 5 before the team has its bye.
RAMSEY'S ROLE
Beyond being one of the most gifted cornerbacks in the NFL in recent years, Ramsey also is familiar with the Vic Fangio scheme from his time with the Los Angeles Rams and he also provided the kind of versatility — including lining up in a safety-like role — to allow the new defensive coordinator to throw more wrinkles at opposing offenses.
Ramsey's arrival also likely would allow Fangio to use a cornerback to shadow an opponent's top wide receiver — like maybe Davante Adams of the Raiders on Nov. 19 — confident that the other side is in good shape with Xavien Howard (or Ramsey).
Ramsey has been sidelined since he went down on the second day of training camp while covering Tyreek Hill in practice.
He was placed on injured once the Dolphins got down to the 53-player limit, and now will become the third player designated to return — each team is limited to eight such moves every year.
The other two were offensive lineman Robert Jones, who was activated Saturday, and running back Jeff Wilson Jr., who still has two more weeks of practice before the Dolphins have to make a decision on him.
Cornerback Nik Needham also is in his third week of practice, but he was on PUP and that doesn't count against the eight-designation limit. The Dolphins will have to make a decision on Needham's status by early next week.
