The first free agent development involving the Miami Dolphins on Monday involved a departure, with safety Brandon Jones headed to the Denver Broncos.

Jones agreed to terms on a three-year contract worth $20 million, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

It's a very good contract for Jones, who earned $2.7 million in 2023 while playing 16 games with six starts.

Jones had been with the Dolphins since arriving as a third-round pick out of Texas in the 2020 NFL draft. He started 30 games in his four seasons with Miami, including a career-high 13 in 2021.

Jones had two interceptions last season, both coming in the 30-0 victory against the New York Jets at Hard Rock Stadium in December.

His best skill, though, always was blitzing, and previous head coach Brian Flores emphasized it with him, leading to Jones leading all NFL safeties with five sacks in 2021.

THE DOLPHINS STATUS AT SAFETY

Jones was one of two safeties headed for free agency this offseason along with his good friend and former Texas teammate DeShon Elliott.

Unless they re-sign Elliott, the Dolphins will be in the market for a starting safety to pair with Jevon Holland, who will be heading into the final year of his rookie contract in 2024.

At the very least, Jones could have provided depth in the secondary had he returned.

But the Dolphins weren't going to match the money that gave Denver offered him.
