There's a new name in the Miami Dolphins search for a new defensive coordinator, but this one isn't quite as familiar.

The Dolphins have requested an interview with Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Vic Fangio after one season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelisserio.

This comes after an earlier report that the Dolphins had scheduled a weekend interview with former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley.

THE BOOK ON BABICH

Babich joined the Bills coaching staff in 2017 at the same time as his father, Bob, and replaced him as the linebackers coach in 2022 after Bob Babich retired after 19 seasons as an NFL assistant.

Prior to that, Bobby Babich first was assistant defensive backs coach and then safeties coach.

Bobby Babich, who will turn 41 in July, has been an NFL assistant since 2011 with stints with the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns, sandwiched around one year as defensive pass game coordinator at Florida International University in Miami.

Like Staley, Babich also will interview for a defensive coordinator position with the Green Bay Packers. Babich earlier interviewed for the same role with the New York Giants.

Under Babich's tutelage, Bills linebacker Matt Milano earned All-Pro recognition in 2022 and Terrel Bernard emerged as a front-line player in 2023.

Babich and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel worked together in 2014 when both were on the Cleveland Browns coaching staff, Babich as assistant DB coach and McDaniel as WR coach.
