The Indianapolis Colts will have to finish the 2023 season without their new franchise quarterback.

Anthony Richardson will undergo shoulder surgery that will end his promising rookie season, the team confirmed Wednesday.

Richardson suffered the injury to his throwing shoulder during the Colts' Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans. Richardson had just returned to the lineup after sustaining a concussion earlier in the season.

In a statement released by the team Wednesday, team owner Jim Irsay said that multiple medical opinions were sought out for Richardson's situation, and that season-ending surgery was the best option for the star quarterback's long-term health:

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Florida, Richardson will now set his sights on rehab, recovery, and a return at full strength in 2024.
