Bernhard Raimann
Central Michigan Chippewas

One-Liners

As a converted left tackle from tight end, Raimann is still very much a raw player for the position. His athletic profile gives him some intrigue as a prospect, but will definitely need to improve upon his inconsistencies to see an important role beyond the collegiate level.

Pros:

Considering he has put on around 65 pounds since arriving at Central Michigan as a tight end, Raimann has adapted to his new frame extremely well. He has great functional strength and maintains his balance throughout each rep, no matter what the task at hand is. He has very good foot quickness and length to protect the pocket. Anchor is very solid to maintain his balance and hold off edge rushers consistently. Impressive, but not surprising, straight-line speed when advancing up the second level seeking linebackers to block at the second level. Demonstrates explosion and power as a vertical run blocker. Shows good knee bend in his two-point stance at the line of scrimmage. Absolute beast in the run game when he gets his leg drive going underneath him with good hand placement. Can mirror edge rushers fairly well while keeping smooth footwork.

Cons:

Being born in 1997, Raimann is an older prospect compared to others in the class. He is a tight end convert so he is still very new to the position and the technique that comes with it. His first step off the line is quick but short. He has short, choppy steps in pass protection when dropping down the arch of the pocket. Inconsistent hand placement causes him to lose control of blocks quicker than he’d like on occasion. Hips appear to be tight that limits his ability to open up his hips and change direction as a run blocker. This also causes him to whiff on some blocks in space. Hands come off as soft at times, although he has the ability to pack power in his hands, he just needs to show it more often. Struggled against fast, bendy edge rushers who beat him to the spot quickly after the snap.

Summary:

After coming into Central Michigan as a tight end, Bernhard Raimann has converted to their starting left tackle, where he has played for the past two seasons. Raimann has taken leaps and bounds within his development over the past two years learning the position. The athleticism, quickness and movement abilities are very apparent, especially given his background. He has done extremely well from last season to develop his understanding of playing offensive tackle. He also looks very comfortable in his new body. He still has ways to go in order to develop his hands and overall technique, but he is on a heavy upward trajectory that is exciting to watch.

Background:

Bernhard Raimann attended Delton-Kellogg in Michigan and was a foreign exchange student from Austria. Raimann played wide receiver in high school and was recruited as a tight end. He was rated by 247Sports as a 2-star recruit, the 2,656th recruit nationally, the 122nd-best tight end and the 58th recruit in Michigan.

Raimann committed to Central Michigan and as a freshman in 2018 he played in 12 games, started four and finished with 10 catches for 88 yards. In 2019, he played in 14 games, started seven and finished with 10 catches for 76 yards. In 2020, he transitioned from tight end to left tackle, started all six games and was named All-MAC fourth team by Phil Steele. Raimann has continued to start at left tackle in 2021 and has played exceptionally well to boost his draft stock.

Raimann is a multi-sport athlete who played soccer and skied in Austria, then tried track and wrestling in America. He wasn’t introduced to football until he was 14 years old. Raimann’s work ethic is evident with his position switch and he mentions it was a difficult but rewarding task. The most challenging part for him was “Pass setting is some sort of an unnatural thing to do because you are going backwards as someone of decent size as least is running at you as fast as he can. The timing of the whole thing was the hardest part for me simply because I had to learn it during Covid. We only had about three practices in before we got shut down and then we didn’t get to be with the coaches or anything for a long time. Spring ball got cut short, we didn’t have Summer workouts and they canceled our season. We didn’t get to have Fall Camp or anything either so just trying to learn all of those techniques while not being around the team, putting on pads, or having coach right there was hard. Just trying to figure it out by recording myself and sending videos to my coaches and trying to learn it by myself was probably the hardest part.”
