Devonte Wyatt
Georgia Bulldogs
One-Liners
Gap penetration style defensive tackle with a great get off who lacks anchor in the run game.
Pros:
Possessing a long and explosive first step, Wyatt threatens and beats blockers with his great get off. He gets penetration against sliding fronts right off the snap. Using his hands, he breaks free when attacking upfield by using a rip move or double hand swipe. Wyatt shows upper body strength to pull waist bending blockers. As a run defender, he consistently penetrates the backfield and utilizes his upper body strength to shed blocks. A high effort player, Wyatt frequently gets home thanks to his motor.
Cons:
Lacking lower body strength and playing with inconsistent, often too high, pad level, Wyatt gets displaced in the run game. He is unable to anchor against double teams. Below average length prevents him from extending and controlling blockers. He is not instinctive, having to process when engaged unexpectedly. Wyatt’s hands as a pass rusher are inconsistent and can be off the mark. Upright play allows blockers to land their punch in his chest. He is a below average finisher, taking poor angles and missing.
Summary:
Average sized defensive tackle with great get off and below average lower body strength. Wyatt is best when attacking gaps and getting upfield as he can use his athleticism and active hands to penetrate the backfield. As a run defender, he is unable to control gaps and gets displaced frequently. Wyatt projects as a rotational defensive tackle and three technique for a gap penetration style front. He will make splash plays in the backfield and leave rushing lanes due to his all or nothing play style. His immediate impact will be on passing downs.
Background:
Devonte Wyatt attended Towers high school in Georgia where he was named 2016 All-State Class 3A defense by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Georgia Sportswriters Association. After high school, 247Sports ranked him as a 4-Star recruit, the 278th-best recruit nationally, the 17th-ranked defensive tackle recruit in the country and the 27th recruit in the state of Georgia. Wyatt attended Hutchinson Junior College where he finished with 30 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a blocked PAT in 11 games. After JUCO, 247Sports ranked him as a 4-Star recruit, the 8th-best recruit nationally, the 4th-ranked defensive tackle recruit in the country and the 3rd recruit in the state of Georgia.
Wyatt headed to Georgia in 2018 where he appeared in 12 games and finished with 19 tackles. In 2019, he appeared in 13 games and finished with 30 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 27 pressures. In 2020, he started all 10 games and finished with 25 tackles, two tackles for loss and 14 pressures. In 2021, he started 12 games and finished with 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 22 pressures. He was named to the Coaches’ All-SEC 1st Team and the AP All-SEC 2nd Team.
In February of 2020, Wyatt was arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of family violence, criminal trespass and damage to property for kicking down the door to his partner’s room, after a verbal altercation. The case was dismissed a few months later as both Wyatt and the female involved, said they did not fear for their safety. Despite the dismissal, NFL teams will likely circle this incident and question Wyatt about it, as character is such an important trait that teams look for.
