Jack Jones
Arizona State Sun Devils

One-Liners

Witty Corner with pop in both his hands and feet, plays the game with fluidity and nuance, Jones has a skillset worthy of a first-round pick, but off-the-field issues and overall size may affect his draft position.

Pros:

Jones is a fluid athlete that moves well in his pedal and in/out of breaks. Showed an ability to work in both press-man coverage and zone. With quick hands, he attacks the chest of wideouts and disrupts route timings. As a zone defender, he sinks well in coverage when safety help is present only to bait opposing quarterbacks. Understands and plays the game with nuance in terms of leverage, hand fighting, and coverage rotation. Plays much bigger than his listed size in the run game where he comes up fast and with intention. Willing tackler that wraps up and plays through the ground. High-effort guy with noticeable motor late in-game.

Cons:

A small athlete with a slighter frame. Tends to lose in disadvantageous matchups where receivers can play through him. A great athlete but struggles on the 50/50 ball due to lack of size. Can occasionally get caught in his break on slants or rub routes but mirrors well overall. A dismissal from USC for a misdemeanor charge of a commercial burglary that led to time away from football. Only played in one game in a shortened 2020 season.ad issues academically and extracurricularly that have made him unreliable.

Summary:

An athletic and technical corner that possesses adequate movement skills to play in a number of systems. Possesses great burst, reaction, and recovery ability to play in the nickel or outside. His lack of size and major off-field concerns will shrink his list of possible fits in the NFL and will need to interview well. Despite all that, Jack Jones has the talent to excel in the league when given the chance, as long as he has matured mentally.

Background:

One of the nation’s top recruits coming from famous Long Beach Poly high school in California, Jones was a five-star recruit with a long list of accolades. Jones committed to USC where it did not take long before he rose to a starting role for the Trojans in his sophomore year. Just when Jones was hitting his stride, he was dismissed from USC following an arrest resulting in a guilty plea in which he took a deal for misdemeanor commercial burglary. After time away from football and a trip to Moorpark Junior college, Jones found ground with the Sun Devils and Arizona state. Picking up where he left off at USC, he had strong 2019, and 2021 seasons in Tempe, Arizona.

Quotable

Following a game-sealing pic six against rival Arizona, Jones was reflective of his journey and humble in his post-game press conference where he stated, “I just want to thank coach Herm (head coach Herm Edwards) and everyone here at ASU for believing in me and letting me be a part of the program after everything I have been through.”

Quote

"I'll be honest, today it felt a lot more smoother because, you know, I just came back from the Combine and at the Combine, I don't know, I was just real tight, you know, muscles tight. You know, I was in my head too much. But out here, like (head) coach Herm (Edwards) says, it's a home-field advantage so, you know, that kind of kicked in." - Jack Jones at ASU pro day

CAREER

Mostly a backup and special teamer in 2016, in his first season as a starter for the Trojans in 2017, Jones recorded 40 tackles, seven pass defenses, one forced fumble, and four interceptions. After time in JUCO, he arrived at ASU and recorded 46 tackles, 13 pass defenses, one forced fumble, and 3 interceptions in 2019. After only one game in 2020, Jones produced 41 tackles, six pass defenses, one sack, three forced fumbles, three interceptions of which one was taken back for a touchdown.

NEWSWIRE

11/27/21

Jack Jones cements his legacy in the Territorial Cup history books with an 87-yard pick-six. Zero doubt that a high-octane player of his caliber would show up big-time in both of his appearances against ASU’s bitter rival.

Cole Topham, Arizona State reporter for Devil’s Digest. Nov 27, 2021.

11/29/21

Eric Galko struck gold with ASU's Jack Jones and Kellen Diesch for the Shrine bowl. Jones lacks size, but he compensates with athleticism, foot speed, instincts & scrappy mentality vs. run. Diesch is one of the better pass protectors, with balanced, agile feet and poised sets.
