One-Liner:
Old-school linebacker with great instincts, McFadden lacks the traits and upside to be anything more than a scheme-dependent backup.
Pros:
It is hard to find players with the production McFadden had in college. The Tampa product, put together quality tape over the course of his career. McFadden is a fantastic blitzer, who utilizes solid straight line speed and instincts to get after the quarterback. He consistently got after the quarterback from the middle linebacker spot and off the edge. As a run defender, McFadden also displays really impressive instincts. He is always one step ahead of the offense, and he has a great feel for where to be to make a play on the football. In zone coverage, McFadden is usually in the right spot. He moves pretty well in zone coverage.
Cons:
The tape is really good with McFadden, but his transition to the next level is concerning. He isn’t a bad athlete, but he is nothing special for his size. McFadden has a small tackle radius and struggles to tackle more athletic players. The technique is solid, but he consistently missed quicker and agile players. His sideline to sideline range wasn’t impressive, and he is only a straight line player. He struggles coming downhill and then having to move to the left or right.
Summary:
Teams are going to like how productive McFadden was in college. He is an old-school linebacker, who relies on his football IQ and experience to make plays as a middle linebacker. With that being said, his lack of athleticism and small tackle radius are evident on film. If he is asked to do too much at the next level, McFadden could struggle. Right now, he is a bottom of the roster player, with the chance to be a backup in the right situation.
Background:
Micah McFadden was born on January 3rd, 2000, in Tampa, Florida. He is the son of Douglas and Debroah McFadden. Micah played high school football at Plant, under head coach Robert Weiner. As a senior in high school, McFadden was named first-team all-state. He was a three-star recruit by 247sports, and he chose Indiana over Boston College, Southern Miss, and UMass. McFadden played in all 12 games as a freshman, recording 20 tackles and one tackle for a loss. As a sophomore, McFadden led the Hoosiers, with 60 tackles and nien tackles for a loss. He was named Indiana’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior in 2020, McFadden started all ten games and was named team captain. He recorded 59 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, and six sacks. McFadden also started in ten games as a senior, putting up 77 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, and 6.5 sacks. For his efforts, McFadden received an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl.
