Eagles and Lane Johnson Agree on Monster 1-Year Extension

The Eagles All-Pro RT is getting $30 million in guarantees in exchange for cap relief

The Eagles and Lane Johnson have agreed on a one-year contract extension, according to an NFL source.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the deal as $33.445 million with $30M of that guaranteed to the All-Pro right tackle.

Arguably the best right tackle in the NFL, Johnson, 32, hasn’t allowed a sack since Week 11 of the 2020 season and hasn't allowed even a quarterback hit since Week 7 of the 2021 campaign.

In return for the upfront money, the Eagles will get significant salary-cap relief on the new deal lowering Johnson's scheduled $24M cap hit in 2023 to $14.8M, just under $10M in savings that will help with the expected extension for quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Before the new deal, Johnson was under contract through 2025 for $47M over three seasons but nearly all of that money was base salary with little guaranteed money left on the deal. Now, Johnson is on the books through 2026 for around $80M with the key for him being the $30M in guaranteed money.

Johnson made his second All-Pro team after the 2022 season and was a Pro Bowl selection for the fourth time. He also played through the playoffs and the Super Bowl with a torn adductor muscle that was surgically repaired after the season.

Often called "the best right tackle in the world" by head coach Nick Sirianni, Johnson's impact on the Eagles since arriving as the No. 4 overall pick in 2013 has been undeniable. The franchise is 79-47-1 when Johnson has been on the field and well underwater when he's not at 13-22.
