Eagles' A.J. Brown Has 'Egregious' Madden Rating, Says Chris Simms
As someone who has been a critic of quarterback Jalen Hurts, Chris Simms hasn't always made friends among Philadelphia Eagles fans. However, his latest opinion on receiver A.J. Brown may help to get him back into the good graces of some in Philly.
Last week, EA Sports revealed that receiver A.J. Brown was given a 91 rating in "Madden NFL 24," which the former NFL quarterback and current NBC analyst slammed on the most recent episode of his podcast.
"Let's start there -- brain blow emoji. The most egregious thing by far is A.J. Brown at a 91," Simms said. "A.J. Brown was unstoppable last year. Double team him, throw the ball up like you did in the Super Bowl, oh it didn't matter, touchdown. Throw a slant, 70-yard touchdown. He Mossed people all year long. A.J. Brown should not be (expletive) anywhere near the No. 8, that's insane. To me, A.J. Brown should be right up there in the class with Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams."
Among receivers, Brown's 91 rating put him in a tie with Amari Cooper of the Cleveland Browns for eighth. The seven names ahead of him were Jefferson, Hill, Adams, Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams, Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills, Ja'Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals and Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders.
While it's fair to wonder if someone like McLaurin deserves to have a higher rating than Brown, the more productive discussion would just be to focus on whether a 91 adequately represents the player that Brown is. After three excellent seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Brown exploded in his first campaign with the Eagles, catching 88 passes for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns. Even if he isn't worthy of being the exclusive "99 Club," Brown seems more like someone who should be a 94 or 95 rating, as opposed to 91.
Of course, the year is 2023 and ratings for Madden are updated each week. It's entirely possible that if Brown continues to produce at the level he did a season ago, his rating will be adjusted to reflect his production. Still, 91 doesn't seem to capture the type of player that Brown was for the Eagles last season.
