Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown Wins NFC Offensive Player of Week Award
PHILADELPHIA – It’s been 11 years since we’ve seen the kind of streak that Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown is on right now with five straight games of 125-plus receiving yards.
The last time that happened was 2012, from Nov. 4 through Dec. 2, when Calvin Johnson did it with the Detroit Lions. Johnson is now in the Hall of Fame.
Evidence of just how rare of a feat: Brown and Johnson are the only two to do so since the 1970 merger.
Brown tied the record Sunday night by catching 10 passes for 137 yards. He added a 14-yard touchdown. For that performance, Brown was voted as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
“Shout out to Calvin Johnson, man,” said Brown. “Just to be beside his name, it says a lot. I’m honored. That guy is a Hall of Fame receiver, something I hope to be one day.”
It is the first time Brown has won the award, and he becomes the fifth Eagles receiver to ever do it, joining DeSean Jackson (three times), Irving Fryar, Jeremy Maclin, and Calvin Williams.
“He’s an internally motivated person as is,” said his good friend and quarterback Jalen Hurts. “Every person challenges himself to be better than they were. I think he’s done that. I think he’s gone beyond measures to take his game to the next level. I think a lot of it has been mental.
“He’s handled everything well. He’s stayed within himself, and he’s really been eager to take advantage of his opportunities when they come. So, just continuing to be that selfless player while being hungry and having the tenacity when his opportunity comes, and he takes advantage of them.”
Brown wore a bandage under his left eye when he met with reporters following the Philadelphia Eagles 31-17 win over the Miami Dolphins last Sunday. He spent a few plays in the medical tent having it checked out, but on his first play after getting out of the tent, he caught a 32-yard pass from Hurts on fourth down that brought the Eagles to first-and-goal at the 1.
“I was OK,” he said after the game. “My vision calmed down. I just got hit in the cheek really hard. My facemask ended up cutting me or something like that. My visor. I’m OK, though.”
Brown will try to earn the NFL record for 125-plus receiving yards in six straight games on Sunday (1 p.m.) when the Eagles travel to Fed Ex Field to play the Washington Commanders.
“I’m just staying prayed up and working hard, trusting my coaches to keep putting me in situations, trusting the game and letting it come to me, and when I get the opportunity, make the most of it,” he said.
“I don’t want to say I’m in a zone. Each and every possession, I’m trying to stay locked in with my routes and just making sure I’m catching the ball.”
