Did Eagles Dodge a Bullet by Not Trading for Allen Robinson?
Veteran receiver Allen Robinson signed a three-year, $46.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams last offseason. But before Robinson decided to sign with the Rams, he was in deep conversations with the Philadelphia Eagles, per reports in February from The Athletic.
However, a last-second video call with Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay convinced Robinson to head west. He suited up for the defending Super Bowl champions with high expectations.
After the Eagles missed out on Robinson, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was able to trade for Tennessee Titans receiver A.J. Brown on draft night. It was a move that sent shockwaves throughout the NFL because Brown was never a name linked to the Eagles in trade rumors. The Eagles locked him up with a four-year, $100 million contract on the night they traded for him.
Brown went on to have a historic season for the Eagles, breaking the franchise's record for most receiving yards with 1,496 in 2022. His 11 touchdown catches last season were tied for the third-most with San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle and Buffalo Bills receiver Stefon Diggs.
While Brown found great success last season, Robinson, the almost-Eagle, had a miserable first season with the Rams. Robinson only had 33 receptions for 339. Robinson's 2022 campaign ended in Week 11 after he needed foot surgery.
After the season, it looked likely that Robinson and the Rams would move on when the team allowed him permission to seek a trade. His wish has been granted now that the Rams will be trading Robinson, pending a passed physical. to the Pittsburgh Steelers, per reports Monday from ESPN.
Considering his age and recent injury, it appears that Roseman and the Eagles dodged a bullet with Robinson, as the 29-year-old is on the tail-end of his career ahead of potentially joining his third team in three seasons.
