Philadelphia Eagles Bullied by San Francisco 49ers in Rematch, Drop to 10-2
So much for one of the "Game of the Year" candidates.
The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the San Francisco 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, but got truly dominated for the first time in over two years, dropping the NFC Championship rematch to their new-found rival, 42-19.
It was Philly's worst loss since the 41-21 defeat Week 3 in 2021 at the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles (10-2) will head back to the scene of the crime next week with the NFC East title potentially on the line.
Meanwhile, the 49ers (9-3) looked like the new No. 1 team in the conference. The buildup to this marquee NFC matchup featured trash talk from both sides, but the Niners backed it up and then some.
Brock Purdy went 19 of 27 passing for 314 yards and four touchdowns, two of which went to receiver Deebo Samuel. He finished with four catches for 116 yards and the two scores along with three carries for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Despite the big-time numbers from the 49ers, the most interesting moment of the game came during the third quarter after Niners linebacker Dre Greenlaw poked Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro in the face after words were exchanged on the sidelines. Both men were ejected.
The Niners had -6 yards of offense at the end of the first quarter and trailed 6-0, but bounced back in resounding fashion. As the Eagles trailed 14-6 entering the second half, Samuel put the nail in the coffin with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, as San Francisco built a 28-13 lead.
This ballooned to 35-13 at the start of the third quarter, as any hope for the Eagles vanished amid the surprising blowout.
The good news for Eagles fans? Philly is 10-2 and is still in the driver's seat for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. However, the margin for error is much smaller.
The Eagles (10-2) and Cowboys (9-3) kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET from Arlington next Sunday.
