Eagles Camp Day 11: Myles Garrett Headlines Eventful Joint Practice vs. Eagles
Philadelphia - The Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns engaged in a spirited joint practice session Monday at the NovaCare Complex.
The consensus among reporters was either a draw or slight edge for Cleveland thanks to a dominant pass led by Myles Garrett, who left the session early with a foot injury but seemed fine and was spotted signing autographs after the practice ended.
The top individual battles were between Eagles’ wide receiver DeVonta Smith and Browns cornerback Denzel Ward, who embarked on a high-level give-and-take until Ward left early with an illness.
Jalen Hurts was picked off by Ward on a deep ball to Smith in 7-on-7 drills and DeVonta got Ward back when he split the star corner and safety Grant Delpit for a big game.
The Eagles lost two offensive linemen, Landon Dickerson and then Jason Kelce very late into things, but neither injury is thought to be serious. Kelce was kicked and limped off before the practice was called. Josh Sills got first-team reps at left guard in place of Dickerson.
Along with Garrett and Ward, the Browns also lost offensive tackle Jack Conklin, who walked off and was placed into concussion protocol, according to a league source.
Here’s what we observed:
-The Eagles started the session without receivers Britain Covey (hamstring), and Quez Watkins (hamstring), and edge rusher Patrick Johnson (ankle) while receiver Deon Cain returned in a limited fashion with an ankle injury. Covey was wearing a long sleeve on his left leg and Greg Ward and Olamide Zaccheaus took the punt return reps in his absence.
-Maybe the top Eagles defender was rangy defensive end Josh Sweat, who seemed to get Deshaun Watson at least twice by victimizing Jedrick Wills.
-The Eagles' defense started with Nakobe Dean and Nicholas Morrow at linebacker and Reed Blankenship and Terrell Edmunds at safety but there was a lot of mixing and matching with Christian Ellis at LB, and Sydney Brown and K’von Wallace at safety, including plenty of big nickel looks.
-Sean Desai also lined up Jalen Carter outside at the times and the No. 9 overall pick is starting to make a consistent impact. He beat Joel Bitonio, one of the best guards in the NFL during one impressive rep.
-Cornerback Zech McPhearson is turning into a very good punt gunner on special teams, shutting down a potential return before the football reached the returner.
-The Eagles’ offensive line had a difficult time with the Jim Schwartz-engineered Browns pass rush and Garrett really got the best of Jordan Mailata.
-Philadelphia’s most consistent work on offense was Hurts to Dallas Goedert. Cleveland did not seem to find the answer when it came to stopping the tight end. Hurts also continued to work his back-shoulder magic to A.J. Brown in one-on-ones.
-Anthony Schwartz, who is essentially the Browns’ Quez Watkins, showed off his speed by running past James Bradberry and leaving help in the form of Terrell Edmunds in the dust for a long touchdown from Deshaun Watson.
-The Eagles tried to get the backs going in the passing game on three consecutive plays to limited effectiveness. A wheel route to D’Andre Swift came up empty followed by a bubble screen to the back for a nominal gain, and finally a conventional screen to Kenny Gainwell, which also was stopped after a few yards.
