Eagles Ex Coach Pat Shurmur Joining Deion Sanders Staff at Colorado
Former Philadelphia Eagles coach Pat Shurmur is reportedly set to join Deion Sanders' Colorado football staff as an analyst, according to a report by 247Sports.
The report notes that the team expects Shurmur's addition to the staff to positively impact the team's offense and the mindset of the players, who aspire to reach the NFL someday.
"Colorado football will be looking for him to add to the culture they are establishing offensively. And to give the players another resource, in their pursuit of reaching the NFL," 247 Sports writes.
Shurmur will bring over 20 years of NFL experience to the staff. He began his career with the Eagles as both a tight ends and offensive line coach in 1999 before being promoted to the team's quarterbacks coach in 2002. In his new role, Shurmur helped guide quarterback Donovan McNabb, who remains of the best players in Eagles franchise history.
Shurmur was the QBs coach until 2008. He was then hired to be the offensive coordinator of the then-St. Louis Rams in 2009 before eventually making a return to Philly to serve as the Eagles' offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2015. When the team fired Chip Kelly in Dec. 2015, Shurmur coached one game as the interim head coach, a 35-30 win over the New York Giants.
He most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 2020-2021. Before that, he was the coach of the New York Giants, amassing a 9-23 record over two years
Sanders and Shurmur have yet to have the opportunity to collaborate during their respective careers. However, it is worth noting that Mike Zimmer, the former coach of the Minnesota Vikings, is now an analyst for Sanders. Shurmur served on Zimmer's staff in Minnesota, and during his time with the Vikings, he earned the accolade of 2017 AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year. He played a crucial role in helping the team reach the NFC Championship that season.
Shurmur and Sanders will now prepare Colorado to open the 2023 season and usher in the "Coach Prime" era on Sept. 2 against TCU, a team that is fresh off a trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
