Eagles Super Bowl Hero Among Those Cut By Cardinals

It's unclear if former Philadelphia Eagles running back Corey Clement has a future in the NFL.
In this story:

Running back Corey Clement's time with the Philadelphia Eagles didn't intersect with the two seasons that Jonathan Gannon spent as the defensive coordinator for the franchise. Gannon's tenure as coach of the Arizona Cardinals also won't include Clement.

Even though the Cardinals are expected to have the worst team in the NFL this season, Clement didn't crack Arizona's 53-man roster, instead getting released Tuesday. Clement played in nine games for the Cardinals a season ago, and was re-signed by the team in March with the thought that he would be a key special teamer. Instead, the 28-year-old now finds himself looking for a job with less than two weeks until the 2023 regular season begins.

Of course, Clement made the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin in 2017. The Glassboro, New Jersey native would ultimately spend parts of four seasons with the Eagles, rushing for 655 yards and scoring nine total touchdowns.

While veterans LeGarrette Blount and Jay Ajayi were the two primary running backs for the Eagles during their 2017 Super Bowl run, it was Clement who arguably stole the show in Super Bowl LII. In addition to being used as a decoy on the iconic "Philly Special," Clement also caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Foles in the third quarter of a 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots. Clement finished the Super Bowl with just three rushes for eight yards, but was the leading receiver for the Eagles, hauling in four passes for 100 yards.

It's unclear what the future holds for Clement, who spent the 2021 season with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Cardinals in 2022. Whether it's in advance of Week 1 or later in the season, one would think there will be an opportunity for Clement to contribute on special teams at some point in 2023. However, if Clement has played in his last game, going from being an undrafted free agent to spending six seasons in the NFL and being a Super Bowl hero for what amounts to his hometown team would be a pretty cool legacy.
