Philadelphia Eagles Cut Former First-Round Pick Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles are parting ways with 2017 first-round pick Derek Barnett.

As the Philadelphia Eagles continue their journey to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, they're making a surprising roster move.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Eagles are waiving defensive end Derek Barnett, who was the No. 14 overall pick by Philly in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Schefter said that Barnett is "expected to draw interest and find a new home soon."

In six seasons with the Eagles, Barnett has played in 72 games while posting 150 total tackles, 21.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and impressively blocked four kicks.

Prior to the season, many questioned Barnett's potential role on a loaded defensive line that already features Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, and rookie standout Jalen Carter.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and coach Nick Sirianni reiterated that Barnett would have an impact this season, but it's clear that things never came to fruition.

“(We have) tremendous respect for Derek and the player and person that he is and what he brings to this football team,” Roseman said. “Love having him here…We’re going to keep as many of those guys we possible can…having those guys lets us sleep a little bit better at night.”

“I just think he has had a great camp and so excited that he is a part of this football team,” Sirianni said. “I love his toughness, his edge, and his ability that he brings to this team every day.”

The Eagles will host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
