Aaron Rodgers Injury: MetLife Field is ‘Trash!’ - Eagles’ Darius Slay

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay says the home of the Jets and Giants needs grass after Rodgers' season-ending injury and a place that cost Jalen Hurts two games, too

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Eagles won’t have to worry about Aaron Rodgers waiting for them when they go to MetLife Stadium next month to play the New York Jets.

An MRI confirmed on Tuesday that the future Hall of Fame quarterback had ruptured his Achilles’ tendon after just four plays in Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

What will be waiting for the Eagles in that Oct. 15 matchup against the Jets, and then again on Jan. 7 when they play the New York Giants is the turf. It’s not great, according to Eagles veteran cornerback Darius Slay.

“He’s in New Jersey, a new (team) and then it’s like, ‘Damn, MetLife,” said Slay. “Everybody knows about that (doggone) stadium,” said Slay. “They need to get real grass. That’s trash (long sigh).

"That’s sad for anybody to go down. I don’t like anybody to go down because we play this dangerous game. Everybody thinks we’re superheroes, but we’re really not. We’re really just normal human beings that go out there and just try to go hard at work."

Slay and Rodgers have a history together with them seeing each other twice a year when both played in the NFC North, Slay with the Detroit Lions, and Rodges with the Green Bay Packers.

"To see him go down, because I know he put a lot of work in with the guys in the offseason, man," said Slay. "I know those guys trust in him and believe in him, but man, I’m praying for him and his family, and I hope he comes back stronger (next year).”

The Eagles have firsthand knowledge of just how bad the surface can be. Two years ago, on Nov. 28, against the New York Giants, Hurts suffered an ankle injury that forced him to miss two games.

The injury may have impacted his effectiveness in that game as well, since he played the worst game of his career, completing just 14 of 31 passes for 129 yards. He threw a career-high three interceptions and had a passer rating of 17.5.

In an ironic twist, the Eagles had to return to MetLife the following week to play the New York Jets. Gardner Minshew filled in for Hurts in the two games he missed and went 1-1.
