Eagles Among NFL Teams With Most Dead Money

The Philadelphia Eagles currently have over $54 million in dead cap space, the fourth-most in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has done a great job of navigating the salary cap and building a Super Bowl-worthy team.

However, there's a hidden cost along with those moves: dead money. Simply put, dead money is any guaranteed money owed to players who have left the team, be it through trade, release or free agency.

While constructing a championship roster, the Eagles have racked up quite a bit of dead money. They currently have over $54 million in dead cap space, the fourth-most of any team in the NFL.

Funny enough, the biggest source of that dead money comes from a player still on the team, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. The Eagles released Cox last year, but quickly re-signed him afterwards. Thanks to that release though, Cox will count for over $15 million in dead money this season. A similar story applies to cornerback James Bradberry, who will count for just under $5 million in dead money.

Other sources of dead money come from players who have left the Eagles recently. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave counts for nearly $12 million, guard Isaac Seumalo for roughly $7.5 million and linebacker Kyzir White for just over $1 million.

Retired offensive guard Brandon Brooks also counts for around $9.8 million, as does receiver Jalen Reagor, who the Eagles traded to the Minnesota Vikings last offseason, for around $1.8 million. Remaining dead money comes from 16 players who each count for under $1 million.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the most dead money in the league at over $75 million, followed closely by the Los Angeles Rams at over $74 million. The Green Bay Packers are third at over $57 million, with the Eagles not far behind.

The good news for the Eagles is that they currently don't have any dead money in 2024. Most teams don't have any dead money for next season yet, but a couple already have eight figures worth of it. That leaves the future wide open for the Eagles as they continue to push for another Super Bowl.
