Eagles WATCH: DeVonta Smith's Hilarious Reaction to Justin Jefferson Fumble
As per usual, Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson was incredibly productive during the team's Week 2 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, a mistake that Jefferson made arguably was his defining play in what ended up being the second consecutive loss by the Vikings to open the season, as Minnesota fell 34-28 to the Eagles in Philly last Thursday.
While Jefferson hauled in 11 passes for 159 yards in Week 2, his second-quarter fumble through the back of the end zone that ended up being a touchback for the Eagles proved to be a turning point in the game. Rather than at least kicking a field goal -- if not eventually punching it in for a touchdown -- the Vikings had to settle with going into halftime down 13-7.
Eagles wideout DeVonta Smith was mic'd up for the game by NFL Films, and joked that after the change of possession, Jefferson's ill-fated reach for the pylon would become an example of how not to act so close to scoring a touchdown.
Take a look:
Of course, the fumble through the back of the end zone resulting in a change of possession and a touchback is one of the most controversial rules in the NFL. Some believe that the opposing team should be forced to take the ball on their own one-yard line after "recovering" a fumble through the back of the end zone. Others believe there shouldn't be a change of possession at all, and that Jefferson and the Vikings simply should have retained the ball at the Eagles' one-yard line.
In any event, receivers are aware of the current rule on the books, and Jefferson probably should have just lived to see another down. Instead, Smith -- who had four catches for 131 yards and a touchdown himself -- and the Eagles ended up moving to 2-0, at least in part thanks to Jefferson's miscue.
