ESPY for Eagles? Jalen Hurts Nominated for Prestigious NFL Award
It likely pales in comparison to starring in the Super Bowl or becoming the highest-paid player in the NFL, but Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Jalen Hurts has more bows to take for his epic 2022 season.
Hurts was announced Wednesday morning as a finalist for an ESPN ESPY Award, in the category of "Best NFL Player." The other nominees for the award are San Francisco 49ers' defensive end Nick Bosa, Minnesota Vikings' wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Something tells us Hurts - as he did in Super Bowl LVII - might just finish second to Mahomes. Even so, Hurts' remarkable season deserves more recognition and celebration.
He finished second (behind you-know-who) in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award, made second-team All-Pro, was chosen for the Pro Bowl, and became the first NFL quarterback with a passer rating of more than 100 to score at least 10 touchdowns as he helped Philadelphia set a team record for victories and win the NFC championship.
The Eagles fell to Mahomes' Chiefs, 38-35, in the Super Bowl. Hard to fathom Hurts doing more in that game, however. He threw for 304 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 70 yards and three more scores, becoming the first player to reach those stats in a Super Bowl.
Fans can vote online for their ESPY favorites through 8 p.m. on July 9. The ESPY Awards presentation ceremony will be televised at 8 p.m. on July 12 by ABC/ESPN.
