'Going Green!' Eagles Fans Line Up All Night to Buy Throwback Jerseys
After months of anticipation, the moment Philadelphia Eagles fans have been waiting for is finally here.
Recently, the Eagles finally shared the first official sneak peak of their long-rumored kelly green throwback uniforms. The Eagles had been toying with their fans who had been begging for the reveal of the throwback jerseys, but finally caved and announced the full reveal would come on Monday.
The clip doesn't show much of the jersey, just the sleeve with the accompanying patch, but this brief snippet revealed an important detail about it. Based on the arm patch, these jerseys are paying homage to the ones the Eagles wore while Randall Cunningham was under center from 1985 to 1995. This is a departure from the Eagles' previous kelly green throwbacks from 2010, which were instead based on the team's jerseys in 1960 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team's NFL championship.
But now we know much more. And we know that in anticipation of Monday's opening of the sales shelves, Eagles fans want in ...
The Eagles first introduced kelly green as their primary color in 1935, supplanting the previous light blue and yellow color scheme, which they paid respect to in a controversial 2007 throwback. Kelly green stuck as the main color for over 60 years (with a slight hue change in the 70s and early 80s), until the Eagles introduced their current midnight green uniforms in 1996. Save for that one game in 2010, the Kelly green jerseys haven't been seen since, until now that is.
The Eagles are far from the first team to jump on the throwback train this offseason. With the NFL retracting its one-shell helmet rule in 2021, throwback uniforms such as Philadelphia's are now able to come back in their full glory. Other teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans have already taken advantage of the new rule, and now the Eagles are finally joining the club.
With the full reveal now here, Eagles fans won't have to wait much longer to see these classic threads back in action. You can wear 'em today ... and you can watch the NFC champs wear 'em twice, starting Sunday, Oct. 22 vs. the Dolphins.
