Eagles OT Lane Johnson 'Super Fortunate,' Feels He Still Has 'A Few Good Years Left'
There aren't many constants in the NFL, but offensive tackle Lane Johnson has been one for the Philadelphia Eagles since entering the league in 2013.
Johnson has fortified the right side of the Eagles' offensive line for a decade now. He has four Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pros to his name, and could easily have more. The Eagles' offensive line has become arguably the best in football recently, and Johnson's strong play has been a huge reason why.
However, it's fair to wonder just how much longer this will last. Johnson is already 33, and he has dealt with several injuries throughout his career. Most recently, he played through a torn adductor during the Eagles' run to Super Bowl LVII and had surgery on it afterwards.
Despite those challenges, Johnson believes he still has plenty left in the tank.
“A lot of my game now is trying to be a smarter player,” Johnson said Tuesday. “Whatever you may have in diminished attributes, you can make up with timing and that sort of thing. I’m happy where I’m at — 33 is old but I still feel like I got a few good years left.”
That said, Johnson realizes he can't play forever. He signed a one-year extension with the Eagles in March, tying him to Philadelphia through the 2026 season. Johnson will be 37 at the end of his current contract, and that may be when he hangs up the cleats.
“Thirty-seven, that would be pretty old," Johnson said. "Then again, [Jason Peters] is 41, so always chasing (him). I’m super fortunate to be where I’m at.”
Until then though, Johnson will aim to stay healthy and continue the strong play he has shown throughout his career.
