Eagles LOOK: Carson Wentz Workout Photo of 3 'Alternate Uniforms'
In five Sundays, the 2023 NFL season will be underway. As things currently stand now, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz might be watching Week 1 from his house with the rest of us.
As Wentz waits for an opportunity, he shared an Instagram post Sunday that was seemingly meant to be self-deprecating. Instead, though, it felt a little sad, a reminder of how far the former No. 2 overall pick has fallen.
The post read "Back in the lab ... just looks a little different so far this year 🙃 #alternateuniforms #trainingcamp2023" with Wentz wearing his old Eagles helmet, a Washington Commanders practice jersey and Indianapolis Colts shorts.
Wentz spent the first five seasons of his career with the Eagles. To say his half decade in midnight green had it's fair share of trials and tribulations would be an understatement. Of course, Wentz's peak came in 2017, when he finished third in NFL MVP voting, probably failing to become the first Eagle to win the award only because he suffered a season-ending torn left ACL in a Week 14 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Backup Nick Foles would come in out of the bullpen, and continue a magical run that culminated in the franchise's first Super Bowl title. Wentz would have some nice moments after that, but never seemed to recover from not being the one to guide the Eagles to a championship.
Following his benching in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts for the final month of the 2020 season, Wentz was traded to the Colts. While he tossed 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions in 2021, he had some maddening turnovers and the Colts collapsed in a Week 18 loss to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, ending their season in unceremonious fashion.
Wentz lasted just a season in Indianapolis, before being traded to the Commanders last offseason. Washington would go 2-5 in games that he started in 2022, with Wentz looking like a shell of his former self as he finished with nearly as many interceptions (nine) as touchdown passes (11). Wentz was released by Washington in February.
While it hasn't entirely been a quiet offseason for Wentz -- there's been buzz about his willingness to be a backup and the work he's doing with former Super Bowl winning coach Jon Gruden -- there haven't been any reports linking him to a specific team. It's not clear if the 30-year-old will get an opportunity to be part of a team in 2023.
