Eagles 'Dragged Through the Mud!' Nick Sirianni Reveals Super Bowl Motivation

The Philadelphia Eagles' loss in Super Bowl LVII still stings, but coach Nick Sirianni is using that pain to keep his team sharp heading into the new campaign
In this story:

Over five months have passed since the Philadelphia Eagles' nail-biting defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, but the sting of that defeat is still fresh.

That's not entirely a bad thing, though. While that defeat obviously still hurts, it can also serve as motivation for the Eagles to get back to that high and finish the job. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni is looking at the situation through this lens, using photos of the Chiefs celebrating to rally his team.

“It’s OK to use this as motivation. You should use it as motivation,” Sirianni said to a media group that includes EaglesToday.com at SI. “But the end goal is not just to say, ‘I’m going there.’ It’s about the process.

“To me, it’s very healthy to do that. It’s healthy to — as Frank Reich used to say to me — drag yourself through the mud. … This is the accountability piece of our program. It’s healthy to drag yourself through the mud. To get real dirty, and to like, ‘Oh, I messed that up.’ But then there’s got to come a time where you get yourself out of the mud and you realize you’re here for a reason and you’re confident in your abilities and to move on. But there is a healthy portion of dragging yourself through the mud because that’s how you get better."

Motivation is one thing, but getting back to the Super Bowl is a long process spanning several months. Even with the level of talent across the roster, the Eagles still have put in the work to reach their championship aspirations. Knowing that, the main goal for Sirianni is just getting a bit closer to that goal each day.

“Our goal every day isn’t to come in here to chase the Super Bowl,” Sirianni said. “You hope it gets to that, but it’s to look at the daily increments, right? And how we get better, how we get better, how we get better. … You got to be really good to win. You got to be really good to get to the playoffs even, right?"

The Eagles seem to have the "really good" part covered, as they currently have the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl. They obviously have to prove that hype is justified, but if Sirianni's motivation tactics are effective as they seem, that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
