Eagles Fall Flat Late, Ravens Continue Preseason Streak
The Philadelphia Eagles had a chance to put an end to a one-of-kind streak that the Baltimore Ravens have kept going for what seems like forever.
But after a sloppy second half that saw the offense go scoreless, the Eagles came up short in Saturday's preseason opener against the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, falling 20-19. Baltimore's streak now moves to 24 straight preseason wins.
The Eagles, who rested starters, got a strong showing from rookie quarterback Tanner McKee, who went 10 of 20 passing for 148 yards while leading a pair of first-half scoring drives. His first-half play helped Philly take a 13-10 headed into the locker room.
But after the Ravens - who were boosted by a 60-yard field goal from Justin Tucker as time expired in the second quarter - took a 17-13 lead in the third quarter, they never looked back.
Eagles quarterback Ian Book came in and struggled to get the offense moving, though he nearly had the chance to give Philly the lead late in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia undrafted rookie cornerback Eli Ricks picked off Ravens quarterback Anthony Brown and took it back 31 yards for a touchdown, giving Book a chance to put Philly in front on the ensuing two-point conversion while trailing 20-19.
"Just gotta keep making plays, that's all I'm worried about," Ricks said after the game. "I plan on getting more picks in my career."
However, Book threw a pick in the end zone, and the Ravens were able to run out the rest of the clock after the Eagles turned it over on downs on their final possession.
The Eagles will take on the Cleveland Browns at home on Thursday in their second preseason game.
