Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Blasted by Chris Simms: 'Most Overrated Player in Football!'
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ended an MVP-worthy season in 2022 with a second-place finish in the award race and a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl.
To reach these heights in just his third season was as remarkable as it gets, so naturally exceptions were through the roof entering 2023. Hurts and the Eagles started off the season as if the task of defending their NFC crown hadn't phased them, but instead let a 10-1 record slip through their hands before an embarrassing playoff loss officially brought the inevitable.
Hurts' numbers were impressive once again, but only translated to wins for fantasy football players. While his inconsistencies down the season's final stretch were tough to ignore, he's hardly deserving of all the blame for what was certainly a team-wide collapse.
Just don't tell that to NFL analyst and former quarterback Chris Simms.
Usually facing no shortage of criticism and "crap" for what many consider to be outlandish takes, Simms delivered another one that Eagles fans might find controversial by calling Hurts "the most overrated player in football."
“I respect a lot about Jalen Hurts, but I think Jalen Hurts is also like the most overrated player in football," Simms said. "That’s me, I know I’m wrong, I take a lot of crap about that comment."
Many critics of Hurts might point to his bloated rushing touchdown numbers as a reason for the overrated label. Hurts benefited greatly from the controversial "Tush Push" this past season by setting a career-best 15 rushing scores, many of which came right at the goal line among a pile of bodies on a play that's hardly considering sexy.
Simms thinks it goes beyond that though, and offered up a suggestion for who could quarterback the Eagles better than Hurts.
Eagles Backup QB Decision Will Reveal Truth About McKee
"He plays quarterback for a team that’s an all-star team, they have the best O-line in football, it’s not even close," Simms continued. "I just think if you put some other quarterback in Philly, you put Kyler Murray in there, you’d say ‘Damn, Kyler’s amazing. Is he the MVP of football?’"
Murray got the best of Philly and Hurts in a wild Week 17 upset at Lincoln Financial Field, but to say he'd be able to overcome the Eagles' defensive struggles is a bit ridiculous.
Hurts is certainly deserving of criticism after a season to forget, but Simms throwing out the "most overrated" label is a ridiculous take at the least.
Simms said it best himself: "That’s me, I know I’m wrong."
