QB Tiers: Eagles' Jalen Hurts Elite, But Questions Remain
After an MVP-caliber season last year, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has earned his spot among the league's best signal-callers.
Earlier this week, The Athletic unveiled its annual quarterback tiers based on a survey of 50 league insiders who classified 30 veteran quarterbacks into four tiers. Hurts found himself in the second tier while being recognized as the sixth-best quarterback in the NFL. An NFL executive attributed Hurts' dual-threat ability to his high ranking.
"Hurts has progressively at every level gotten better the longer he is in a system," The Athletic writes. "He is not just solely a runner. He has shown he can push the ball down the field."
However, an NFL coach remains concerned about Hurts' inability to prove himself in two-minute situations during his three-year NFL career.
"That is why I was so fascinated with the Super Bowl," The Athletic writes. "If they do not call that pass interference (on the Eagles), Kansas City kicks a field goal and then we find out once and for all, Jalen Hurts in the 2-minute. Because the last time he was in one, and people forget this, they lost at home on Monday night. Washington didn't let him out of the tackle box, and Philly did not win that game."
If Hurts is able to take another step in his game and improve his ability to perform in two-minute drills during this season, he has the potential to move up to the first tier in The Athletic's rankings next year.
