Eagles BREAKING: Sign LB Myles Jack, Cut Third-Round Pick

Myles Jack and Zach Cunningham should give the Philadelphia Eagles depth at a position of need after they gave up on Davion Taylor, a third-round pick just three years ago

PHILADELPHIA – It was only a matter of time before the Philadelphia Eagles swung for the fences at the linebacker position.

On Sunday, just prior to their one and only open-to-all-fans practice at Lincoln Financial Field, they hit what looks to be a two-run home run, signing a pair of veteran free agents at the position – veterans Myles Jack and Zach Cunningham.

The team also added offensive lineman Josh Andrews, who spent the first three years of a career that began as an undrafted free agent in 2014 out of Oregon State in Philadelphia.

To make room, the Eagles released linebacker Davion Taylor and waived-injured receiver Charleston Rambo.

It was a bit of a surprise that the organization would give up on Taylor who was someone who they thought enough of to make the 103rd overall pick just three years ago. Taylor was a raw, project-type player after not having played high school football due to his religious convictions as a Seventh-Day Adventist.

It wasn’t long after Taylor was sent packing the reason why was revealed with the additions of Jack and Cunningham.

It was clear the Eagles needed to do something at the position with an ankle injury suffered by Nakobe Dean during practice earlier in the week and an unimpressive performance thus far in camp from free agent signing Nicholas Morrow, formerly of the Chicago Bears.

Clearly, there just wasn’t enough depth at the position to feel comfortable, though Christian Elliss, a former undrafted free agent from Idaho, has been standing out in a big way.

Cunningham, 28, was limited to just six games last season with the Tennessee Titans due to a variety of injuries, including an elbow. He made just 24 tackles last year.

In five seasons with the Texans, however, the second-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2017 started 66 games and made 503 tackles with five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and one interception. In 2020, he made 164 tackles, including 106 solo.

Jack, who will turn 28 on Sept. 3, was a second-round pick (37th overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016 out of UCLA. He has produced 100-plus tackles in four of his last five seasons, including last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has three career interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

After leaving Philly, Andrews spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints. The Eagles are also expected to have another lineman in camp this week after Josh Sills was acquitted over the weekend of rape and kidnapping charges.
