Eagles Signing Pass-Rusher Leonard Floyd Proposed by Media
Can a team have too much of a good thing? One media-driven concept for the Philadelphia Eagles - who are coming off a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl but who have otherwise experienced a fantastically successful offseason - says the answer is "no.''
And so along comes the idea of general manager Howie Roseman finding a way to bring Leonard Floyd into the fold. The Eagles have been named as a landing spot for Floyd by at least one media outlet with the argument that "the fit makes sense.''
But we're not so sure. The Eagles are coming off a season in which they had 70 sacks. For the record (and we mean literally for the "record'') that is an all-time franchise high and just two shy of the NFL single-season mark of 72 set by the Chicago Bears in 1984. Four players on the 2022 Eagles recorded double-digits, and in this most recent NFL Draft, a pair of first-round picks were used on Georgia defensive pressure players Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith.
So the issue here isn't one of "need.'' It's one of "want,'' and surely one of "price.'' Roseman and the front office have worked to manufacture some cap gymnastics to make this roster come together (topped off course by QB Jalen Hurts' gigantic new deal). How much can be spent on a luxury item>
Floyd will be 31 in September, so a short-term deal would be preferred. But last yea with the Rams, he registered 31 QB pressures and nine sacks. Oh, and ex NFL Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman via The 33rd Team, writing about Floyd in general, notes, "I still think he has enough in the tank to be a rotational edge rusher ...''
Spotrac has projected him to be a $13.7 million APY guy - three years and $41 million is what they say he's worth. All things considered, Leonard Floyd isn't "worth'' that to the Eagles. But maybe a phone call is merited to find out what winning a ring in Philly would be worth to Leonard Floyd.
