Eagles Trade for Aaron Donald Proposed by Media; Would Howie Risk It?
Would the Philadelphia Eagles sell the future for the present of employing maybe the best defensive tackle of his generation in Aaron Donald?
Eagles GM Howie Roseman has already engineered his restocking plan after his team ended up losing in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35.
That’s meant a pricy goodbye to Javon Hargrave, who signed a deal via free agency with the San Francisco 49ers. … with the Eagles feeling good about 2022 first-round pick Jordan Davis and 2023 first-round pick Jalen Carter as interior forces.
Is there logic to the Bleacher Report trade proposal that would bring to Philly a force in Donald to add to a defense that racked up 70 sacks last season?
There is certainly the notion that you “never say never” if Donald is ever made available by the likely non-contending Los Angeles Rams. BR suggests Philly offers the 2024 first- and second-round picks in its fantasy idea.
Would the Rams ever do such a thing? Maybe; in theory, they could at the trade deadline - assuming they’re non-contenders - do Donald a solid by moving him to a contender “back home.” (Donald played at Pitt.)
Donald remains arguably the best defensive player in the NFL right now and one of the most dominant ever …
But here’s the logical “but”: If the Eagles wanted to give up massive capital for a standout defensive tackle, why not just keep Hargrave? He’s now making $….. APY. Donald presently makes zzzz APY.
Why ditch Hargrave to grab Donald when in addition to the money it destroys future draft plans?
The bet that Roseman is making is wiser than this one; the Eagles already have the best roster in the NFL, and with the development of Davis and Carter plus the retention of those premium draft picks? The Eagles can stay that way long-term by standing pat with the existing core.
