Eagles Beat Vikings 34-28: Live Game Log

After a near-miss in Week 1 in New England, the Philadelphia Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football in their home opener at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles easily handled the Vikings last season in a late-September 24-7 win that Philadelphia hopes to duplicate.

Both teams are coming off head-scratching performances in Week 1. Minnesota suffered a 20-17 loss at home to the Buccaneers, while Philly had to pull out all the stops to narrowly pull out a 25-20 win at Gillette Stadium to the Patriots.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts thanked each member of his defense in the locker room after the Eagles' win, as the team struggles to figure out their identity one season removed from a Super Bowl loss.

“That’s something that we’re navigating," he said. "We’re going to continue to grow. And it’s always better when you win.”

The defending NFC champions were held to 251 yards of offense in Week 1 and hope to get back in rhythm in Week 2, potentially using the running game as a source of momentum. The Eagles led the league in rushing touchdowns per game last season.

The Philly defense will take aim at Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins who threw for 344 yards in the loss to Tampa. Cousins will be targeting superstar receiver Justin Jefferson who's coming off a season opener that saw him post nine catches for 150 yards.

"This is the week to bounce back," Jefferson said after losing to Tampa Bay on Sunday. "Just coming off of a loss and now playing a team that just was in the Super Bowl ... we gotta learn from this and then going into next week, a short week at that, ready to play and getting our bodies right."

In each of the Vikings' two most recent prime-time visits (2022, 2018) to Lincoln Financial Field, they've only been able to score one touchdown ... a trend the Eagles defense would like to continue.

FIRST QUARTER: Eagles 3, Vikings 0

The Eagles start the game with the ball from their own 25 after the touchback.

Philly starts the game through the air with a six-yard pass from Hurts to Smith, then Hurts gets sacked for a one-yard loss. On 3rd and 5, Hurts scrambles to the right sideline for seven and a first down.

Hurts passes to Goedert for a loss of one yard to the left sideline, then hits Smith for 54 yards deep down the right side to the MIN 10. The offense stalls after the Vikings defense stiffens up inside the red zone.

FIELD GOAL EAGLES: Elliott is good from 24 yards for an Eagles 3-0 lead with 9:48 left in the first quarter. The scoring drive goes 69 yards in nine plays and takes 5:12 off the clock.

The Vikings start at their own 25 after the touchback.

Kirk Cousins throws complete to Justin Jefferson for 15 yards to the MIN 40 with Darius Slay in coverage. Cousins hits Jefferson again for a gain of just one, then throws incomplete to Mattison across the middle under heavy pressure from the Eagles' defense. Cousins misses Osborn on third down. The Wright punt goes to the PHI 8, received and fumbled by Covey, and recovered by Ringo at the PHI 10.

Hurts throws incomplete to Goedert on first down then hits him for six yards on second down. A false start penalty on Johnson moves the ball back five yards to the PHI 11. On 3rd and 9, Hurts scrambles and gains only three. 

FUMBLE RECOVERY EAGLES: The Siposs punt goes 40 yards to the MIN 46, returned 19 yards by Powell, and he FUMBLES at the PHI 27, recovered by Morrow. First down Eagles.

Swift runs off left guard for seven, then up the middle for four and a first down.

Swift carries again off right end for 12 to the 50-yard line.

Hurts is sacked for a loss of seven by Jones and Hunter. Goedert catches a screen pass for a gain of one.

INTERCEPTION VIKINGS: Hurts attempts a pass deep down the middle to Smith on 3rd and 16, and it's INTERCEPTED by Jackson at the MIN 35. First down Vikings.

FUMBLE RECOVERY EAGLES: Mattison runs off left tackle to the MIN 27 for two yards and FUMBLES, recovered by Evans at the MIN 39. First down Eagles.

Hurts scrambles left for no gain, then finds Brown for a gain of five. On 3rd and 5, Hurts is sacked for a loss of three yards.

MISSED FIELD GOAL: Elliott is no good from 55 yards. The Vikings will take over from their own 37.

Cousins passes incomplete deep down the left side for Jefferson. Defensive offsides is called on Fletcher Cox.

END OF THE FIRST QUARTER

SECOND QUARTER: Eagles 13, Vikings 7

Cousins finds Addison for nine yards, then hits Osborn for six and a first down at the PHI 42.

Mattison runs off right guard and is stuffed for a three-yard loss. Cousins hits Hockenson for four, then on 3rd and 9, Cousins finds Hockenson again for 24 yards to the PHI 17.

Mattison runs off left end for a gain of five. Philadelphia's Maddox was injured during the play.

Cousins passes short right to Jefferson, who runs out of bounds at the PHI 5.

TOUCHDOWN VIKINGS: Cousins passes to Hockenson for five yards and a touchdown. The extra point is good for a 7-3 Vikings lead. The scoring drive goes 55 yards in nine plays and takes 5:03 off the clock. 

The Eagles start at their own 25 after the touchback. Swift runs for seven off right guard, then runs for three more and a first down to the PHI 35.

Hurts passes to Swift on the right side for a short gain of one, then Swift runs for six to the PHI 42. On 3rd and 3, Swift runs up the middle for four and a new set of downs.

Swift runs for two, then Scott gains seven. On 3rd and 1, Scott gets four.

Hurts scrambles right for eight and runs out of bounds at the MIN 32, then Scott gets five up the middle to the MIN 28 for a first down with 5:47 left in the half.

After a first-down incompletion, Hurts finds Brown across the middle for 11.

Swift scampers up the middle for seven, then off right end for five and a first down.

Cousins hits Mattison in the right flat for a loss of five yards, then hits Mattison through the air for no gain. On 3rd and 15 Cousins misses Addison deep down the right sideline. The Wright punt goes 49 yards to the PHI 30, where it's fair caught by Covey.

 Swift runs for nine, then Penny gets six. Hurts passes to Penny for five and Penny runs for two more.

FOURTH QUARTER: Eagles 34, Vikings 28

Hurts misses Brown then Penny gets just one. On 3rd and 9 from the MIN 36, Hurts completes to Smith for eight.

FOURTH DOWN CONVERSION EAGLES: On 4th and 1, Hurts sneakes through the middle for three yards.

Hurts passes deep down the right sideline complete to Brown in the end zone. The play is nullified by a Penny holding call. 

Hurts throws incomplete deep into the end zone for Brown, then Hurts is sacked for two yards. On 3rd and 22, Hurts is sacked for a loss of 12.

The Siposs punt goes 35 yards to the MIN 14.

Mattison carries for seven on first down, then Osborn drops an absolute dime from Cousins deep down the middle. Cousins then finds Jefferson short across the middle who runs for 23 yards to the MIN 44. Udoh was injured during the play.

Mattison runs left end for six yards to midfield, then Cousins finds Jefferson for 22 yards to the PHI 28.
