'Greedy' Eagles Sign Yannick Ngakoue in Free Agency Prediction
After coming so close to a Super Bowl win last season, the Philadelphia Eagles have had a busy offseason as they look to finish the job.
While they've lost some key players like defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and running back Miles Sanders, the Eagles have still had an impressive offseason overall. They retained some of their most important players like cornerback James Bradberry and center Jason Kelce, and locked up star quarterback Jalen Hurts for the long haul. They then had a strong draft, getting some big value at key positions.
However, there's still more than two months before the regular season, so the Eagles have time to make one more big move. But what might that move be, if it happens at all? If ESPN's suggestion is anything to go by, Philadelphia should sign free agent defensive end and former Indianapolis Colt Yannick Ngakoue to complete its offseason.
" ... Let's get greedy as it pertains to a top Super Bowl contender," ESPN writes. "Waves of depth are essential for a pass rush in the NFL, and Ngakoue is a sack specialist who can provide Philly what it felt Robert Quinn would bring when it acquired him last offseason. Ngakoue won't exactly come cheap, but do you think I'm worried about the Eagles finding a way to make a move work under the salary cap? He had 9.5 sacks and 29 pressures last season with the Colts."
Of the few free agents still available, Ngakoue is easily one of the best. The former Pro Bowler has 65 career sacks and has recorded at least eight sacks in each of his seven NFL seasons. Although he has played for five different teams, Ngakoue is a quality player that any squad would love to have.
That said, there are some hurdles in the way of this signing. The Eagles have roughly $12.7 million in cap space, which still may not be enough to give Ngakoue what he's looking for. Additionally, Philadelphia already has a stacked pass-rush, so like ESPN says, Ngakoue may be a luxury good.
Adding Ngakoue would certainly be a flashy move with some solid upside, but doesn't seem entirely necessary with the Eagles' current roster construction.
