Rumor: Could Jalen Hurts' Eagles Draft Senior Bowl MVP QB Spencer Rattler?
A couple of key factoids before fans of the Philadelphia Eagles write in ink the idea of South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler being drafted to Philly ...
*The fact that he was named Senior Bowl MVP this weekend is a nice feather in his cap. But it doesn't necessarily vault him from what most scouts think will be his April NFL Draft future as a Day 3 pick.
*In some ways, he outperformed guys who are more highly ranked, including Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. But they'll still be first-rounders almost surely ... as we are very early in this process.
*Philly Birds Country notes that "the Eagles showed interest and already met with Rattler.'' Good, but ... conventionally at the Senior Bowl, virtually every team meets with virtually every player.
So the real news might be if a team failed to meet with a prospect.
Now ... do the Eagles like the 23-year-old quarterback? Do they need to add another body with Tanner McKee, a sixth-round rookie from a year ago, already in the fold?
And one more thing that is surely somewhat haunting to Rattler: When he was at Oklahoma - where he was a Hurts teammate - he was touted early on as a Heisman candidate and then as a No. 1 overall pick. But he was eventually benched in favor of Caleb Williams ... who eventually moved to USC, where he has become a No. 1 pick candidate ...
Eagles A.J. Brown Trade Rumor: A 'Bombshell' Truth
While Rattler transferred to South Carolina, where had back-to-back 3,000-yard seasons and 37 touchdowns for the Gamecocks from 2022-23.
We do believe that dart throws on QBs in the draft is wise; if the Eagles somehow get lucky on McKee, or the next guy, or the next guy, it's a bonanza. Indeed, they have an MVP-level player in Hurts, who as a second-round pick himself also qualifies as a fortunate dart throw.
And yes, maybe the Eagles can do it again with a late-round try with Rattler.
