Vance Joseph will Reportedly Interview with Eagles for DC Job
As Jonathan Gannon was being introduced to the media and fan base as the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, his defensive coordinator was getting ready to interview with other teams.
One of those is reportedly the Eagles, who are looking for a DC to replace Gannon, who was hired shortly after Philly’s 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl XVII.
Josina Anderson, of CBSSportsHQ, reported the news on Joseph and the Eagles' interest in talking to him.
Joseph has been the DC in Arizona since 2019 and spent two seasons as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, in 2017 and 2018.
He went 5-11 in his first season with the Broncos, improved to just 6-10 in his second, and Denver parted ways with him and his 11-21 record at that point.
The Eagles have an in-house defensive coordinator candidate in DB coach Dennard Wilson, who was instrumental in helping the Eagles rank first in the NFL in pass defense, allowing just 179 yards through the air during the regular season.
Wilson has been praised by his corners, veterans Darius Slay and James Bradberry, for helping them develop even further despite both of them being in the league for a combined 17 seasons, saying he would make an excellent DC.
Joseph is known for utilizing various blitz schemes, something that excites Eagles fans and something Gannon chose not to do much during his two seasons in Philadelphia.
Gannon’s background is on the defensive side of the ball, and he told reporters in Arizona that he isn’t sure yet if he would continue to run the defense, a decision that could impact Joseph.
Gannon could opt to become a CEO type of coach that Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni became after turning over play-calling duties to his offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen. Even if he does, though, Gannon may look for his own DC and cut ties with Joseph.
As for Steichen, he is no longer around after he was named the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.
Sirianni is the first coach to lose both coordinators to head coaching jobs in the same hiring cycle since 2013 when Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis lost Jay Gruden to Washington and Mike Zimmer to Minnesota.
Losing two coordinators to head coaching jobs hadn’t happened to a Super Bowl participant since 1994 when San Francisco lost Mike Shanahan to the Broncos and Ray Rhodes to the Eagles.
