Philadelphia Eagles Sign OT Jordan Mailata to Major Contract Extension - Details
The Philadelphia Eagles have made some big moves in free agency this offseason, but arguably their most-important decision came on Thursday.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Eagles are signing offensive tackle Jordan Mailata to a three-year, $66 million contract extension that includes a massive $20 million signing bonus.
"This just in: Eagles and LT Jordan Mailata reached agreement on a three-year, $66 million extension that includes $48 million guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus, per sources," Schefter tweeted. "The deal ties Mailata to Philadelphia through the 2028 season."
Per the report, Mailata's new $22 million average annual pay trails only Laremy Tunsil, Trent Williams and Andrew Thomas for the NFL’s highest-paid offensive tackles.
Mailata, who just turned 27 on Sunday, has exceeded all expectations since being a seventh-round pick by the Eagles in the 2018 draft. A longtime professional Rugby player in Australia, he popped on NFL draft radar through the league's International Player Pathway Program. He was scouted by Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, and the rest is history.
Scouts understandably had their doubts about Mailata's NFL ability due to his lack of collegiate playing experience, but the Eagles took a chance on him and it paid off. He didn't make his NFL debut until Sept. 2020. Since then, he's played in 62 games and 57 starts in the regular season. He's also started all five playoff games he's appeared in, including the Super Bowl LVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
