Philadelphia Eagles S Reed Blankenship Signs Contract Extension, Receives Big Bonus
The Philadelphia Eagles are retaining a key defensive piece ahead of the first season under coordinator Vic Fangio.
The team announced that they've signed safety Reed Blankenship to a one-year contract extension through the 2025 season. After going undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State in 2022, Blankenship has carved out a solid NFL career for himself and is now officially here to stay in Philly for at least another season.
Blankenship, 25, has played in 25 games while making 19 starts over the past two seasons. During that span, he's tallied 147 total tackles, one fumble recovery, one QB hit, 13 passes defended and four interceptions.
Monday was a big day for Blankenship, as the NFL announced that he received a bonus of $923,000 for the league's performance-based pay distribution, the second-highest amount among eligible players.
Though he didn't make the final cut for the 2023 Pro Bowl, Blankenship received position-leading votes when the first release came out in early December. However, Philly's late-season likely contributed to him missing out on the Pro Bowl.
“It’s not surprising,” Eagles cornerback James Bradberry said at the time. “I see the work Reed puts in. He’s a very important piece to this defense. I feel like he’s our physical enforcer. He’s been making a lot of big-time tackles for us. He’s made some plays in the pass game as well, so it’s not surprising to me.”
