Why Kirk Cousins Gives Atlanta Falcons 'Chance' at Making Postseason
The Atlanta Falcons have made their goals for the upcoming season clear: they want to end their six-year playoff absence. Despite it being the first year under new coach Raheem Morris, the Falcons haven’t been shy of expressing their playoff aspirations.
Not only have the Falcons talked about making the postseason, but they have even shown it through their moves this offseason, specifically in free agency. Like last offseason, the Falcons were big spenders, this time heavily focusing on improving their offense. This saw them find their new franchise quarterback in Kirk Cousins, who by himself, according to Morris, gives them a “chance.”
"If you have a quarterback, you have a chance," Morris said. "And Kirk Cousins, getting him in free agency, that was a big up for us. It was a big move for us. it was huge for us. It gives us the best chance to win football games and go out there and compete every single weekend with the experience that he brings, the knowledge that he brings."
Before his Achilles injury, which is likely the biggest question regarding the 35-year-old, Cousins threw 25 or more touchdowns in eight consecutive seasons, a feat only four other quarterbacks have achieved. If that is the level of play the Falcons get out of Cousins, it is hard to imagine that they will not make it to the postseason.
Especially considering they achieved seven wins last season despite having inconsistent quarterback play that led to them losing several one-score games.
General manager Terry Fontenot's patient rebuilding approach has seen the Falcons accumulate several first-round talents, especially on offense. In fact, the Falcons' last three first-round picks have been playmakers.
With tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson, the Falcons have their core of offensive players, which is set to be completed with the signing of Cousins.
