Rob Gronkowski Reveals Why Falcons Fit Bill Belichick
The Atlanta Falcons have interviewed a plethora of candidates for their coaching vacancy over the past two weeks, but it's abundantly clear that their top choice is former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Belichick, who won six Super Bowls across nearly a quarter of a century in New England, has already interviewed twice with the Falcons, being the only candidate to do so thus far. With numerous reports stating that Falcons owner Arthur Blank wants to hire the legendary coach, it seems like it's more of a "when," not "if," Belichick arrives.
Throughout the Falcons' courtship of Belichick, some have asked why he would want to come to Atlanta. After all, the Falcons haven't made the playoffs in six years, and considering that Belichick wants to break Don Shula's all-time win record, it seems like a strange fit at first.
However, former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski believes he knows why his old coach is interested in the opening.
"What makes the Falcons a great place for coach Belichick is that they’re an underachieving team with a lot of talent, and coach Belichick knows how to take talent that’s underachieving and then overachieve that talent," Gronkowski told Fox News Digital. "I’m pretty sure they got some room in the salary cap as well to bring in some players. They have like five first-round draft picks on the offensive side of the ball like the last five years. They have a lot of talent.
"He’ll go in there. He’ll know how to utilize all that talent. Also, they got a pretty solid defense, which obviously he’ll upgrade even more. And, then, on top of it, they love to run the ball. And he’s a guy that loves to run the ball and jam it down your throat as a coach."
If the description of a talented yet underachieving team sounds familiar, it's because an ESPN report earlier in the week used that exact same wording. Multiple teams could fit that description, but perhaps none as well as Atlanta.
Despite the Falcons lack of success over the past half-decade, they may not be as far off as it seems. Atlanta has good talent on both sides of the ball, with the only really lacking positions being quarterback and head coach. Belichick would solve one of those problems, and could easily solve the other with how many players still want to join him.
Falcons to Hire Belichick, Sign Kirk Cousins in Free Agency?
There may be some concerns on the surface, but overall, there's a lot to gain for both parties.
