Falcons DE Calais Campbell Signs Contract: Details, Incentives Revealed
The Atlanta Falcons secured a significant upgrade to both their defense and locker room with the recent signing of defensive end Calais Campbell.
Despite facing competition from a trio of teams, the Falcons ultimately landed Campbell's services - but at what price?
According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, Campbell's contract is as follows:
- Base deal: one-year, $7 million with a fully guaranteed $4 million salary and $3 million signing bonus.
- If Campbell gets five sacks, he'll earn a $500,000 bonus, and if he gets eight sacks, he'll earn another $500,000 bonus.
- If Campbell plays 60 percent of snaps, he'll earn a $500,000 bonus, and if he plays 70 percent of snaps, he'll earn another $500,000 bonus.
- If Campbell plays 85 percent of snaps and gets five sacks, he'll earn a $1.5 million bonus.
The 36-year-old Campbell recorded five and a half sacks in 14 games for the Baltimore Ravens this past season, logging 62 percent of defensive snaps when healthy.
But with incentives on the line for playing time, how big of a role does Campbell anticipate having?
“Sixty percent sound about right,” Campbell said. “I think I can go out there and give you a high-quality 40 plays a game at a high level. Thirty-five of them are going to be elite plays in my opinion.”
Should Campbell play 40 snaps across 17 games, he'll log 680 total snaps; the Falcons defense was on the field for 1,112 snaps last year, which would put Campbell at just over 61 percent.
Nonetheless, the Falcons are happy to have Campbell - and will be even happier if he plays at a high enough level to achieve most of the incentives.
