Falcons Fantasy Football Fallout: Time for Drake London Owners to 'Worry?'
Week 1 of the NFL season is behind us, and with it came the first loss for thousands of fantasy football managers who were relying on Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London.
In regards to London's zero receptions in his season debut, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith was blunt.
"Let the fantasy guys worry about that," Smith said. "We've got to clean some things up. We can all be better in our spacing, and targets is the most misunderstood thing in the National Football League. All we care about is 1-0. We have a lot of work – and that has to improve because it's not going to sustain every week. Every week is its own entity. We don't care about the stats. We care about winning.”
While it's understandable that people should be frustrated about London's lack of targets, coach Smith alluded to the idea that he could be getting more targets this week against the Green Bay Packers.
“There’s a lot of mythology on offensive football. You could force a little screen to somebody that’s going to be a low percentage if it’s not the right look to get them a touch. Again, when you call plays sometimes, they have a say. So, if they’re rolling to him or whatever, or again, a lot of it comes in the game plan opportunity. When you’re up, and you feel in control of a game, maybe you don’t want to give them a chance to hold the ball on a seven-stepper for a sack-fumble to lose the game. That’s not going to be the case every week.”
With an average draft position that had fantasy managers selecting him in the mid-sixth round, it's best that anyone who invested a pick on London at least waits for some opportunities to find him rather than giving up on him after a horrendous Week 1 start. He's a buy-low candidate entering Week 2 of the fantasy season based on his talent, but Atlanta's run-heavy offense will cap his ceiling.
London and the Falcons face off against the Packers on Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
