BREAKING: Falcons Sign Ex Ravens DL Calais Campbell in Free Agency
The Atlanta Falcons’ standout free agency continues.
Per NFL Network, the Falcons are set to sign Calais Campbell to a one-year contract.
Campbell, who visited the Jacksonville Jaguars among other teams, “bought in to” and “believes in” the vision of Falcons coach Arthur Smith and general manager Terry Fontenot.
But what ultimately sealed the deal for Campbell was a 40-minute phone call with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, centered more about “non-football” things such as leadership, charitable impact and work within the community, according to NFL Network.
The 6-8, 300-pound Campbell will turn 37 years old just before the start of Week 1, but he remains a productive player on the defensive front and is extremely valuable off the field.
A former Walter Payton Man of the Year winner, Campbell started 14 games for the Baltimore Ravens this past season and had five and a half sacks, four tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits, missing three contests at season's end due to a knee injury.
Campbell has earned six Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections across 15 professional seasons, recording 99 sacks and 165 tackles for loss. He's played in at least 12 games in each season, missing five total in the last two years.
The door had previously been left open for Campbell to return to Baltimore - but he ultimately choose Atlanta, a notion he’s truly confident the team is ready to compete this coming season ... and evidently still has enough gas in the tank to contribute.
